Local Spotlight: Azeem Ahmed of Equal Clothing - Breaking Barriers in Glasgow with Empowering Streetwear

In the heart of Glasgow’s thriving creative scene, a young entrepreneur is challenging conventions, breaking barriers, and redefining what it means to be truly “equal.” Azeem Ahmed, founder of streetwear brand Equal Clothing, is not just building a fashion brand - he’s manifesting a movement.

Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy from a young age, Azeem’s journey from a boy facing societal assumptions to a streetwear innovator is a testament to his resilience, creativity, and an unshakeable belief that, while not everyone is born equal, their contributions certainly can be.

Equal Clothing’s ethos is as bold as its designs:

“Equal Clothing isn’t for anybody. It is for Any Body.”

More than a slogan, it’s a rallying cry for inclusivity, representation, and empowerment. As Azeem continues to navigate the challenges of launching and sustaining a premium streetwear brand, his story inspires not only those who live with disabilities but anyone who has ever dared to dream.

From Challenge to Creation

Diagnosed with muscular dystrophy at just three years old, Azeem’s life has always been shaped by a profound sense of determination. Doctors gave him a limited life expectancy, yet, rather than focusing on limitations, Azeem saw opportunity - an alternative path to the one that was laid out for him. Azeem chose to make his mark, build a legacy, and uplift others who might feel overshadowed by a world that often overlooks them.

During his school years, Azeem faced a familiar but frustrating reality. As educational priorities shifted towards mental health and behavioural challenges, those with physical disabilities were often left to fend for themselves. In Azeem's own words, “It was assumed that with an able mind and a wheelchair, I could get on by myself.” That assumption - that physical disability somehow equated to a lack of ambition or potential - became one of the catalysts for Equal Clothing.

The COVID-19 pandemic only deepened these challenges, isolating Azeem further and highlighting the systemic barriers that many people with physical disabilities face in pursuing education, careers, and creative aspirations. Yet even in those quiet moments, Azeem’s resolve never wavered. He began to sketch the idea that would become Equal Clothing - a brand with a focus on disability awareness, built to challenge the streetwear market from the ground up.

The Birth of Equal Clothing

Equal Clothing launched in 2022, fuelled by Azeem’s passion and unwavering sense of purpose. The brand’s mission is twofold: to create competitive, premium streetwear and to challenge the stigma that people with disabilities face in both fashion and society. From bold hoodies to statement t-shirts, Equal Clothing’s designs are not just fashion statements; they’re declarations of individuality and pride.

But Equal Clothing goes beyond labels. It’s a platform for challenging societal perceptions, sparking conversations, and proving that creativity knows no boundaries. As Azeem puts it, “This is my opportunity to prove that anyone can achieve through the perceived impossibilities of disabilities. Everyone needs help from friends sometimes, and when we work together, we can all achieve amazing things.”

Indeed, Equal Clothing’s tagline - “It isn’t for anybody, it is for Any Body” - embodies this spirit of radical inclusivity. It’s a reminder that fashion, like opportunity, should be accessible to all, regardless of background, ability, or circumstance.

Triumphs and Milestones

Equal Clothing’s journey has already seen moments that many established brands would envy. One of the most memorable was the unveiling of a bold billboard near the M8, emblazoned with the brand’s slogan. For Azeem, seeing his vision come to life on that scale was nothing short of transformative. Speaking to Glasgow Life in 2023, “I was shocked when I saw it for the first time,” Azeem shared. “Overwhelmed, and there were tears of happiness.” It was a testament to his hard work, resilience, and the power of community.

This milestone was made possible with the support of local businesses and passionate individuals, notably mark Russel of 75 Media's Scottish regional team. The wider local business community also praised Azeem’s drive and determination: “Azeem strives for success and breaks down barriers for people who are living with disabilities everywhere, while challenging stereotypes within the fashion industry. This is testament to his character and work ethic.”

Such partnerships reflect the collaborative spirit at the heart of Equal Clothing’s story - a reminder that behind every ambitious entrepreneur, there’s a network of supporters, mentors, and friends who help turn dreams into reality.

Resilience in a Challenging Climate

Launching any business in today’s economic climate is no easy feat, and the fashion industry is no exception. The costs of production, marketing, and distribution can be daunting even for seasoned entrepreneurs. For Azeem, these challenges are compounded by the daily realities of living with muscular dystrophy. Yet rather than seeing obstacles, he sees chances to innovate, adapt, and more opportunities to prove that resilience is as important as creativity.

At a time when many brands are struggling to keep up with shifting consumer demands, Equal Clothing’s commitment to authenticity and community sets it apart. Azeem’s focus on disability awareness, inclusivity, and premium quality resonates with customers who want more than just a t-shirt - they want a story they can be proud to wear.

More Than Just Streetwear

Going beyond the sleek branding - what makes Equal Clothing special is the way the business embodies Azeem’s own values: tenacity, kindness, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every individual. Azeem's journey reminds us that success is rarely a straight path - it’s a winding road - at times marked by setbacks and victories in equal measure. But, those most likely to reap its rewards are the ones with the quiet courage to keep going.

His story is one of a growing community as much as individual achievement. From the supportive individuals behind the scenes to the customers who proudly wear his designs, Azeem’s impact ripples outward, challenging perceptions and inspiring others to believe in themselves.

Equal Clothing in Glasgow: Latest Successes

Azeem and Equal Clothing's latest successes continue with a particular highlight coming from their pop-up shop at the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice's Summer Fayre event - hosted at Bellahouston Park on Sunday 8th of June 2025. Equal Clothing sold a year-high number of garments this day, and Azeem tells us that the funds raised will go toward the next generation of Equal Clothing's designs and lines, which we're all excited to see!

Azeem was also honoured with the prestigious 'Scot of the Year' award at the Scottish Asian and Business awards 2024. Posting on LinkedIn, Azeem shared his excitement:

"I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been awarded Azeem Ahmed (Equal Clothing) - Scot of the Year at the Scottish Asian & Business Awards 2024, presented by Oceanic Awards and Lookers at the Grand Central Glasgow."

Not skipping a beat, Azeem eloquently champions the ideals that he injects into every fibre of Equal Clothing: "As a person with a disability, this recognition means so much more. It’s proof that success isn’t one-size-fits-all. Living with Muscular Dystrophy has taught me that perseverance, passion, and purpose matter more than perfection."

Day in, day out, and at every opportunity; Azeem expresses his genuine and heartfelt gratitude for the friends and family that have joined him in helping to make Equal Clothing what it is today. He's hopeful that the future is looking bright for Equal Clothing and everyone that is part of the project.

In Collaboration with Modemkiller

Azeem approached the team at Modemkiller after a chance meeting at the Lanarkshire Business Awards. Azeem learned about key aspects of Modemkiller's web design offering, specifically that it isn't limited to whole redesigns or fresh-start projects - Modemkiller is able to offer consultations and guidance on best practices that will help businesses maximise the potential of their online presence.

With that in mind, Modemkiller was happy to lend their experience and advise Azeem on the next steps he and his team could take with the Equal Clothing website. Specifically in order to improve the user experience, inject some more of Equal Clothing's vibe and character, and improve the overall quality of the site for SEO.

He knows that his time may be limited, but his impact will last far longer than any diagnosis. Through his brand, he’s leaving a legacy of empowerment and creativity that will continue to resonate long after the last hoodie is sold.

At Modemkiller, we believe that local businesses like Equal Clothing are the lifeblood of our community. They remind us that being our most unapologetic and authentic selves is as essential to business success as any marketing strategy or SEO plan.
